Couple of observations:
Commanded his fastball pretty well, but seemed to like setting up on the outside corner too often and he wasn't hitting that spot enough to overcome his inconsistent slurve so hitters were sitting on it and fouling off a lot of pitches. Right now, his changeup is his second pitch but he didn't use it like that in this start. He appeared intent on using the slurve in the first 3-4 innings even though he couldn't throw it for strikes ( many were in the dirt). Maybe that is the plan in every start right now, to throw the breaking ball a lot so that it can get better (you must always assume this in the minors: players are always working on their weaknesses in game action), but I was kinda hoping to see him break out the changeup vs RHH. Failing this, he didn't have an out pitch in this outing, and got into some long counts with lots of balls fouled off; he just couldn't put the guy away with 2 strikes. I was also wondering why he didn't pitch inside more. With no putaway pitch, it might have helped keep batters off-balance more as they merely sat on the outside FB time after time. So, though this was a good start for Beavan, it didn't seem like one of his best, and he has thrown quit a few in the last month. The three velo readings that I got were 90-91 on the FB (5th-7th).
